Identity Theft: Learn How to Protect Your Most Important Information
If someone were to call your home and tell you that they were your bank and they needed to verify your information, what would you do? Give them the information? If you answered yes to this question, you could be in trouble. The fact is, this is just one way that someone can get your personal information. Identity theft is becoming a very common crime and in order to stop it, you must learn how to protect your most important information.
Using the above example to start, if someone ever calls your home to verify information from you, never, ever, give them your information. The fact is, a bank is not going to call you to verify information. If the bank did need more information from you, they are going to request you to call them back at the bank or request you to stop in to the bank in person. If you’ve ever received one of these types of phone calls, either from a supposed bank or someone wanting your account number so they can send you a “gift†or “lottery winningâ€, it is a scam.
Many people often become the victim of identity theft after their information is stolen. But where do the thieves find your information? Most likely, they get it from stealing your mail or going through items that you’ve thrown in the trash. In other words, never throw anything in your garbage that contains your personal information. The only exception is if you’ve shredded the documents first. To keep your mail from being stolen, get a post office box. It only costs few dollars a year and it will keep your mail safe.
The most important thing you could ever do for yourself and your family members is to practice good safety measures with personal information. Never carry your Social Security cards with your or your birth certificate. Thieves just love it when a purse is stolen that has such information in it. Take the proper precautions and you can prevent you and your family from becoming another victim of identity theft.
